Outsider Musician Daniel Johnston to release 6-disc anthology
Normally, possibly delusional and mad outsider musicians are a tough sell. Yet, the music of Texas native Daniel Johnston; raw, warbling and rambling, childlike and a little creepy, has tranced the ears of many influential musicians from Kurt Cobain to the Flaming Lips. Recorded with the fuzzed, hissed ambience of a $60 tape recorder, his catalogue ranges from outright, hopeless romantic beauty to spotty, juvenile melodies about superheros and demons. Now, Johnston’s creative and sprawling string of albums are the onset of becoming available on a gigantic 6-disc box set, aptly titled, The Story Of An Artist. Tiny Mix Tapes reports that this lmited edition set will include all of his early, cassette-tape-only music releases, as well as a series of lost recordings, complete with a massive booklet featuring artwork from Daniel, among other neat tidbits. Scheduled for a June 22 release, the set, while probably pretty pricey, looks like a detailed and thorough introduction to a truly weird and wonderful artist.
